I Wanna’ Cast A Spell!

Posted By Scott on May 11, 2010

I have over the past couple of games, noticed that spells are somewhat lacking within this system. Their affect and use is pretty much underpowered compared to the rest of the mechanics in place within the game.

The Fix

To fix this I am proposing a significant change and overhaul to the spell system. Firstly mana cost will become 10xSpell Level, (a level 1 spell will cost 10 Mana). However the effects of spells in general will become overpowered in a sense. Clones will be able to enter Duels with not detriment to the caster, they will also gain their own Init presence within the game! (This could become annoying, with multiple clones and many players so it is still only an idea). Healing spells will have the ability to heal HP, plus fully restore BA. AC spells will multiply your max AC and restore it. Dmg spells will multiple your current Damage output, with possible elemental effects.

The feel i’m looking for, is that spells will be extremely powerful and enticing to use, but their mana cost will be so high that only one or two spells can be cast before Rests.

I’m looking for any feedback any of the current players have on this issue. Please leave a comment with any ideas.

Thanks, Scott.

Week 3, The Island of Treasures

Posted By Scott on April 26, 2010

(Part 2 of 4, I’m only a week behind!)

Hey everyone, thanks for the mammoth session yesterday. A total of 8 hours of Dnd was probably the longest it has ever run for and i hope you all had a good time. The first group tackled the mysterious pirate group the Obsidian Leviathan while the second group banished a necromantic skull, overcame the bewildering powers of the Wayfarer’s Twig and crowned a queen to the newly freed Moon Elves. Below are the exploits of the first group:

The Death of A Merchant

As the group of:

  • Aurora – A Banished Lava Elf Illusionist
  • Geldast – A Psychotic Human Mercenary
  • Yalin – A Wood Elf Bard with a flair for Tricks &
  • Charr – A Disguised Crimson Dragon Ravager

Met with Captain Feldar, who had accompanied them during their last adventure for the Casovani family. Within the seedy tavern the old pirate retold his tale of hardship. A once mighty pirate within the Obsidian Leviathan, Feldar was convinced by his unexpected love to give up the unlawful life and start a family with her. Fleeing from the clutches of the vile pirating group, Feldar found peace and happiness, starting a family and captaining vessels for the numerous merchant companies. Tragedy struck when the Obsidian Leviathan found him and slaughtered his new family, ever since the mighty captain has sought his revenge. After their brief encounter with the Obsidian Leviathan, Feldar approached the group and asked for their aid in his quest for revenge, the four above accepted and as they stood around several naval charts and maps covered in markings and notes, Captain Feldar began briefing them on his plans.

The captain, pointed out three targets:

  1. The Almighty Dreadnought and Flagship of the Obsidian Leviathan, Captained by a world renowned swordsman named Tuga
  2. A storage pontoon that floated freely within a coral atoll and maned by a colony of Merfolk. The Merfolk Druid Karakest led his people under the guise of Captain for the Obsidian Leviathan
  3. A remote island that was rumored to hold the pirate companies greatest treasures. With Captain Toras a powerful Psion in charge of warding away intruders.

While the group weighed the pro’s and con’s of each situation. Geldast thought it would be an opportune moment to finish some unresolved issues he had with one of the locals. Slipping from the tavern unnoticed and unseen the Mercenary travelled quickly through the back alleys of Porthollos. The scent of discontent and tension thick within the air, as the people feared the repercussions of the recent assassination of Keordan, head of the Casvoani merchant family. The same Family Geldast was hastily travelling to visit. As the near psychotic Mercenary arrived the Casovani mansion in the middle of the merchant district he quickly scaled to the top floor from the cover of a dark alley. Climbing into an unoccupied room, Geldast heard the enraged and mournful shouts of Jarlyn, the Casovani’s youngest son and new family leader, emitting from the a room down the hall. As Jarlyn finished berating his subordinates they left quickly and quietly not wanting to upset the greiving son anymore than necessary. As quietly as the left, they could only be likened to rampaging animals if compared to the quiet and stealth used by Geldast to enter Jarlyn’s chambers. The young man shot the mercenary a confused look, he new the mercenary as an agent of his fathers, but before he could berate the man for his unannounced arrival, Geldast lifted his crossbow and ended the merchants life with the squeeze of a trigger. The dark mercenary collected his morbid trophy, removing the merchant’s little finger and slipped out the window, travelling the roof tops until he stealthily reentered the tavern room where his compatriots were still discussing their options. A quaint smile crossed his face as he realised his absence hadn’t been noticed.

Toward the Isle of Treasures

The group decided to dodge the reef guarded by aquatic creatures and steer clear of the Obsidian Leviathan stronghold aboard the flag ship opting to target the rumoured treasured island. The made haste towards the docks with final preparations in place, noticing the sounds and sights of the city of Porthollos erupting in response to the news of a second assassination within the Casovani family. Without a clear successor and the families allies rallying to strike at an unseen foe, the entire city seemed on a razor’s edge. Captain Feldar paid little attention to his surrounds, wearing a steely determined gaze he led his crew of adventurers aboard the Wind Wisp and set sail away from the erupting chaos behind him.

Not long into their voyage the party noticed and derelict junk drifting through the island riddled seas. The crude vessel was covered in in red and orange symbols that were familiar to one of the party members. The symbols were Lava Elf war paintings yet Aurora knew her people never ventured far from their volcanic home let alone near the coast or sail upon the seas. The group choose to investigate the odd vessel and found a disturbing sight when they moored against the drifting junk.

Aboard the derelict vessel several Elven bodies strewn about in what little shade they could find, chapped lips and pale skin were the less obvious signs of illness aboard the vessel. Deathly ill the Lava Elves could hardly respond to the intruders aboard their vessel as Aurora, Charr and Geldast boarded to see if they could discover the origin of the disease. Aurora used her natural mana to try and heal one of the sick. As she begun the processes of conjuring the mana for her spell, she felt a weird surge and was suddenly filled with raw Lava based mana. The mana burst forth from her in a blast of dry searing heat that healed her brethren and caused her companions to look on in with stunned expressions.

Healed by the spell the Lava Elves began to move and over time they stood with steadily growing strength. The captain of the vessel approached Aurora and began a harrowing tale about the fate of her people, the people who had banished her, for her natural born affliction with mana.

Since Aurora’s birth amongst her people. The Lava Elves have slowly been awakening to mana and magic again for the first time in five generations. It seems that Aurora who was born already linked to mana is the only one of her kind that is not adversly affected by the remerging of the magical essence, with the rest of her race becoming deathly ill by the alien magic invading their bodies. For now the Lava Elves have no clues as to why magic is returning to them, but they do know that Aurora is the only one of her people that gain withdraw the sickening mana of her people. Incidently with each Lava Elf Aurora heals from this mana sickeness her own abilities and magical power increase.

Armed with this new information Aurora felt a sorrow and connection to her people that had been missing since her exile. The recovering Lava Elves asked for the adventuring group for help in their endeavour to rescue their kidnapped brethen from the Eclipse Elves who were harvesting the Lava Mana for use in vile summoning rituals. The party agreed to help Aurora and her people in their dire situation, but the were politely reminded that their services had already been contracter to Captain Feldar and his search for retribution. After a small discussion, Aurora promised her people that she would return to them and aid them as soon as she had finished helping the old pirate. With that the adventurers reboarded Captain Feldar’s vessel and headed off toward the Obsidian Leviathan’s Island of Treasure.

Kraken

Posted By Scott on April 23, 2010

The apex predator of the seas, Krakens are feared throughout the worlds oceans and dreaded by all sea captains. The different species and sizes of the worlds Krakens are varied as most fish of the sea. Below are the differents species of Kraken: (updated as the species are encountered)

Greysbane Kraken

Greysbane Kraken

Greysbane Kraken

One of the most common and smallest Kraken’s within the world’s oceans, the Greysbane Kraken tends to hunt around reefs and shallow waters where they can hunt without fear of natural predators, primarily larger krakens. In such shallow waters these Krakens are the most common to attack surface born vessels. When attacking surface dwelling creatures or natural prey underwater, they use their enourmously constrcitve tentacles to crush and hold prey while it slowly feeds from the large beak like maw. Unlike the larger Krakens and like their smaller cousins, Greysbane Krakens are the only Kraken to maintain a ink sack. Primarily used a defensive and evasive mechanism, the Greysbane’s ink is also slightly acidic. Mature Greysbane Krakens will actually spray their ink aboard ships before they strike disabling their prey before consuming them. There is a lucrative market for assassins weapons covered in Greysbane’s Ink, however the difficulty in acuiring the ink sack components to make these weapons mean they are very rare and sought after.

The Casovani Family

Posted By Scott on April 20, 2010

With links back to the founding merchants of Porthollos, the Casovani Family are first and foremost are trading business, with family relations coming in second. They specialise in Import/Export services as well as offer a retrieval service for victims of the numerous pirate groups within the area. This special service has earned the Casovani many enemies within the unlawful world and many pirates would cheer at their downfall. Being a near permanent fixture within the Ruling Council of 5 of Porthollos for a vast amount of years, the Casovani have near limitless resources, a vast naval fleet and a personal army of skilled employees. Their constant presence within the council of 5 has seen them attract a large amount of the cities guard, as they a viewed as a solid employer, with many veterans of the guard finding promotions and stability more favourable than the possible higher pay offered by some of the less stable merchant companies that ebb and flow between the council.

All but one relative of this illustrious family have stayed within the family business. The exception was the current rulers eldest son Geor, who has taken to a life of exploration and adventuring on the high seas. His current whereabouts and fate are unknown as the heir to the Casovani business has not been heard of for nearly 8 years. Rumours within the port side taverns, have Geor leading a powerful armada of pirating vessels along the Jagged Coast. These claims are strongly denied and rejected by the Casovani family, not because of their love of Geor, but because such rumours could lead to charges of profiteering. A business that confronts pirates to reclaim stolen goods linked with a pirate would devastate the family business.

Loved by the people of Porthollos, the Casovani are one of the few that offer charity and good will to the less fortunate. Operating out of their 3 storey mansion situated in the heart of the merchants district, business is run from the ground floor, with the second flood an entertainment area for well off clients and regular parties. The third floor houses the living quarters of the family and their closest retainers as well as the Casovani’s most prized items and secrets.

The Casovani Eagles.

Known for utilising many unique and exotic resources. One of the merchant families most famous are their courier eagles. Expertly trained and bred for nearly a century these eagles are capable of carrying messages to ships at sea and agents on land. The secrets with which they are trained is closely guarded but the ability of these birds to find ships and people anywhere is believed magical. To stop rival companies and natural predators from harming their couriers the Casovani train the eagles in several defensive and offensive styles. Reports claim that a flock of these birds has single-handedly saved a Casovani frigate from a pirate assault.

Draconic Eel

Posted By Scott on April 19, 2010

Draconic EelDwelling within the sea caves and deep passages across the world, Draconic Eels are considered by many to be mindless hunters and monsters. Long thick serpentine bodies can grow to be thicker than most ships and be longer than three hundred metres. Their massive heads resemble a dragons and are split by a large gaping maw that is filled with rows of razor like teeth. These massive predatory eels are thickly covered in a naturally produced slime that acts as a very potent natural armour. Some myths tell of Draconic Eels dwelling within the pitch black depths of the world that stretch out for several kilometres.

Draconic Eels rarely attack creatures and ships that travel on the surface. On the rare occasions these behemoths do attack a sea faring vessel, their is usually little more than debris left in the water as the Eel enters a feeding frenzy once the scent of blood hits their nostrils. This powerful sense of smell is suggested to be the cause of several attacks, as old sea captains will often tell, Draconic Eels only ever attack boats that carry ‘Clawdrake Spice’.

Week 2, Pirates, krakens and then the game started

Posted By Scott on April 19, 2010

(Editors Note ~ This play report is now finished, Play Reports in the future will more than likely be alot shorter)

Shop Till You Unleash A Gold Dragons Soul!

Hey everyone. Last nights game was a bit insane with 9 people playing but i think it was a good start to the game. Next weeks session will split into 2 different groups and hopefully that will stop the one hour shopping sessions and one hour single round combats. First of all i’ll start with who played and their characters:

  • Nash: A Chaotic and mischievious Imp Wizard
  • Wayne: A long dead heroic Knight who wanders in search of peace.
  • Bandy: An enigmatic Human Ravager with something unexplicably off with him.
  • Blake: A Snow Elemental Swordmage on a quest for vengeance.
  • Mark: A Highborn Human Rogue with a past and many secrets
  • Lucy: A member of the Moon Elves royalty, investigating a dire prophecy
  • Ali: A banished Lava Elf Illusionist
  • Paul: A Wood Elf Bard gathering stories for his gand repretoire
  • Chris: A morbidly gleeful Human Mercenary

As i said a ridiculous amount of players.

So after last weeks pink dragon slaying the group had returned to meet with the head of the Casovani Family, Keordan. The stern but polite merchant showed his approval and thanks to the group before asking their help for a more personal matter for the Casovani Family. A request that was uneasily accepted. At this point Mark, Paul and Chris were brought in to the meeting room by the youngest of the Casovani, Jarlyn. The two Casovani went on to explain that their merchant business will often be employed to regain lost relics and treasures from the pirates of the area. Currently a local wizard named Selad is searching for a relic that was recently stolen from him during his travels. The Casovani merchants had previously tried twice to retrieve the wizards relic, but both times had ended in disaster. Now the Casovani were hoping on their best captain, captain Feldar to lead this unlikely group on thier quest. The large tattoo covered man entered and began outlaying his plan when Bandy interrupted him, an interruption that wouldn’t be repeated. Feldar, outlayed the information he knew, which wasn’t much. The pirates were situated on the permanently mist shrouded island of Keldar, the first attempt of the Casovani ended in disaster at the hands of the local monsters of the Jagged Coast; while the second attempt never returned after entering the mists of Keldar.

With the foreboding news and mission on the table the Casovani sweetened the deal by offering free supplies to the heroic group from their vast supplies. Everyone followed the cocky and egotistical Jarlyn to the store as he flipped a coin through his finger. Once their, Jarlyn changed his father’s initial offering, stating that any items of his distinction would need to be paid for and not gifted. Mark’s Rogue confronted the young business man about his change of plans and managed to negotiate Jarlyn back to the original deal before the young Casovani stormed off leaving the heroes with the wizened old shop keep. As the group went around obtaining their free supplies Chris’ mercenary quietly stole anything of obvious value increasing the groups overall wealth substantially. Bandy inquired about a powerful magic ring that the shop keeper had on the shelf of the back wall, the old man gazed upon Bandy’s ravager and after a quiet battle of wills decided that the ring would best be kept out of sight. As the old shop keep intently kept his eye upon the mysterious and ominous Ravager, Paul’s Bard strummed a distracting tune upon his lute as the Imp snuck behind the counter to steal the now coveted ring. Before anyone could make any action to the contrary the Imp wizard swallowed the mystical ring! Bandy thought of an unusual punishment and unleashed the Draconic energy that was bound within the ring. The essence of an ancient gold dragon burst forth within Nash’s Imp, but not to a detriment. The imp felt his body become far more stronger and vitalised than before. As the essence of a gold dracon eminated throughout the room some was absorbed by Bandy’s amulet; also increasing his stamina. With the mystical eruption still emenating throughout the room, their would be captain Feldar burst in to rush them along their way.

Pirates? Ramming Speed!

Aboard the vessel the grand group were assigned several tasks to relate to the amount of time they had previously spent aboard sea vessels. Lucy’s Moon Elf, was granted first mate as she was the most experienced, during this task she got to know Captain Feldar and his tragic history. An old pirate reformed through love only to have his family hunted down and killed by the pirates he left, The Obsidian Leviathan. Nash’s Imp had the next highest skill aboard a boat, however that equated into spending several weeks submerged within a barrel of rum! Mark’s Rogue took watch within the crow’s nest to discover two vessels closing in upon thier ship, the Wind Cutter. Calling his news to the captain Mark, announced the flag of pure black. This news sent Feldar into a frenzy and the heroes quickly realized that they were under assault by the Obsidian Leviathan pirates. The dark tattoos that adorned Captain Feldar’s shoulders began emitting undescribable magic and he turned the Wind Cutter head first into the approaching pirate ships. Colliding at full speed the Wind Cutter was saved extensive damage due to a snow shield provided by Blake’s elemental (Eldrist) Swordmage. Upon contact Captain Feldar Launched upon the enemy vessel and hastily laid waste to the crew on the deck. As he matched swords with the captain, several other pirates rushed from below to the aid of their captain only to be confronted by the Dark Mercenary under Chris’s control. Surrounded and completely outnumbered, the pirates quickly swarmed the mercenary only to instantly fall to their knees, desperately clasping at thier gaping wounds. As the second and larger pirate vessel reached the collided boats slightly smoldering due to a fiery burst upon the hull by the dark ravager that failed to catch. The dreadnought launched a volley of cannon fire at the remaining heroes as it closed to board the ship. The Rogue aboard the crows nest managed to expertly run down the split mast and land garcefully upon the deck, just before the mast crashed into the water. Although the Enigmatic Ravager and Lava Elf Illusionist did not manage to dodge the hail of cannon fire. The Swordmage wasted little time to spring aboard the newly arrived dreadnought and instantly freeze half the crew as he landed. The dreadnought’s captain was not amused by this intrusion and quickly engaged the Snowy Swordmage. Pirates rushed the Wind Cutter and several of the heroes were caught off guard as they recovered from the cannon fire. The swift counter attack headed by the ghostly knight was soon over after the bards tunes blinded most of the pirates while the lava elf finished the job. With the boarded pirates taken care off the Moon Elf Wizard launched a fire ball into an amassing crowd of pirates aboard the dreadnought, felling the lot. However the blasting explosion provedid an opening within the two duels taking place to allow the Obsidian Leviathans to have a win. The Eldrist Swordmage’s defence faltered for a brief second as two great swords impaled the elemental, while Captain Feldar stumbled slightly only to be kicked over board. Chris’s Mercenary then found himself going toe to toe with a very skilled adversary taking an early wound in their fight. However the mercenary’s veteran skills and morbid lust for death won the day, slaying the pirate capain in short order. Rushing to the aid of his fallen comrade, Bandy’s Ravager leapt aboard the dreadnought and quickly pushed the dual greatsword wielding captain back. With a burst of magical power the swordmage was healed and the Ravager protected himself against the recovering pirate lord. However with the pirate lord seeing a mighty foe before him he launched again at the still weak Eldrist. With the Swordmage again severely wounded, the Abyssal Imp did something very out of character. A noble gesture, the impish wizard used his powerful arcane abilities to instill life again upon the swordmage whilst opening a portal into the chaos realm directly below the pirate lord, sucking the large brutish pirate into a realm of infinite horrors. Although all this happened so quickly that very few of those present are even aware that these things happened. With the pirates quelled and Captain Feldar restored from his blood lust and rescued from the waters the heroes found a safe cove to lick heal and repair. Although the night would prove very eventful!

Rock the Boat

As the party rested they wore awakened by loud thumping noises on the hull of the ship, rushing to the deck they arrived just in time to see a Kraken’s tentacles erupt from the frothing waters. The spells of the Moon Elf and sharp arrows of the Lava elf kept the beast busy while Mark’s Rogue scaled the rigging. From atop the crows nest mark could make out the abyssal eyes and gaping maw of the Kraken. With an insane chuckle the Rogue leapt from the top of the mask and dove straight into the churning waters sword and rapier aimed at the dark eyes. With a stroke of pure skill and mad luck the thief plowed through the water into drove booth his blades into the eyes of his foe, and in one fluid motion he spun around to cleave off the foul beasts beak. Blinded and severally injured the beast sank away from it’s not so easy meal to fall to the ocean floor, becoming a feast for lesser creatures.

The Mist Shrouded Island

With their adreanaline surging from their battle with a great Kraken of the depths the group made haste to their destination, the mist shrouded island. Captain Feldar’s expert navigation saw them navigate their way through the treachorous shoals and reefs to arrive in the depths of night. the group snuck ashore and easily found the pirates they were looking for but not what they were expecting. A large ceremony raged in the middle of a large encampment, a roaring bonfire crackled and spat embers with large explosions of burning wet wood. Pale elves chanted loudly, dark black veins visible through their opque skin. Tied near the fire and the obvious attention of the chanting Elves was a group of the warrior Lava Elves, they slumped together, with a drained look upon their faces as if ill. Ali watched on in horror as it seemed her brethen were in line to be sacrificed by these dark morbid elves, the beginnings of a rescue plan begun to formulate with half the group as the other half spent their attention on the torch lit temple which sat omminously on the hill above them…

Pink Dragon

Posted By Scott on April 13, 2010

pink_dragonA very unlikely pairing is a white dragon and a red dragon. White dragons are renowned for their brutality and predatory instinct, whilst Reds are best known for their avarice and pride. Both species love to hunt and prove their strength to themselves and weaker creatures. During such displays of strength is when the sparks ignite and the Pink dragon is born.

The rare Pink dragon has rubbery scales covering its stout body that extend evenly over its bloated abdomen. Thickly coated wings fold back to lie flat across the beast’s spine ending near the fin like tail. The broad neck leads to the sickle like maw of the dragon where boiling steam rises from its nostrils and fang filled jaws.

The pink hue of the dragon comes from the constant heat that is generated from the small flame sacs that spurt flame into the dragon’s stomach with each beat of its heart. It has been said that killing a Pink reveals the scales to be more opaque than pink, due to the constant flames burning within. With this unrelenting heat Pinks have become amphibious beasts that need an endless supply of water to drink in order to survive, the combination of water and heat gifts the Pink with its steam breath that scolds flesh and heats metal red hot almost instantly. The rubbery scales let steam escape in intermittent blasts that creates a shroud of displacing heatwaves and unleashes a deafening whistle. Anyone caught within one of these blasts is scolded instantly.

The need of a constant water supply limits the dragon’s possible lairs. They prefer coastal sea caves within storm battered cliffs but have been known to reside within lakes and rivers near wealthy civilisations. Their lairs are not elaborate or complex as they rely on the flooded passages and the boiling waters to keep intruders at bay. Pinks tend to inherit the greed and intellect of the red, the white side of their heritage leaves the pink with a brutal and savage side. The culmination of these aspects creates a very deadly creature that kills anything that it perceives as a possible threat to itself or its considerable horde of treasure. Merchant vessels are a favourite target of the Pink, they use their heat to boil the water and melt the tar, sinking the boat while staying submerged and unseen. They later return and take anything of value from the sunken wreck.

Porthollos

Posted By Scott on April 13, 2010

Deep within a sheltered bay, halfway up the Jagged Coast lies the city Porthollos. The small merchant city is a free race city, with all races treated equally on the cobbled streets of the merchant city. Although all races are treated equally, the majority of the cities denizens are human.

Established in 1718 K.A. nearly 400 years ago. Porthollos’ founders were seeking refuge from the devastation of the ‘Calast Imperial War’ that raged intensely for 30 years, causing large amount of refugees to spread out across the continent in search of freedom and peace. Since its founding the bay hidden city of Porthollos has thrived as a centre of commerce and a regular stop for travellers and adventurers. The ruling council of 5, place strict laws upon the citizens of the city, with increased punishments for visitors. These strict laws and harsh punishments help keep away the unsavory elements that are usually present in other Free cities. However with the cities strong economic standing and a ruling council that is constantly competing in business, conflicts and shadowy deals are always occuring under the surface. Leading to situations that many of the wiser occupants of the city try to avoid.

In recognition of the original merchant founders of Porthollos, the ruling council of 5 is comprised of a member of each of the 5 wealthiest Merchant companies at any given time. This means that members are often changing, with some companies and families joining and being replaced in the council several times in a year. The competition of general business coupled with the grandeur of council membership has driven the merchants of Porthollos to become some of the finest and most ruthless merchants in the world. An old adage states, ‘To buy spice in Porthollos, is to buy a spice farm without the farm’.  Many adventurers and heroes that rest within the city for to long will often find themselves caught up in the overly competitive ampitions and plots of the ruling council of 5.

The army and law enforcers of the city are the ‘Merchants Watch’. Controlled by the council of 5, the greatest veterans and most skilled detectives are assigned for the personal use of each of the council members. This means that the general populace is often protected by new recruits and under-skilled watchmen.
